How to Verify if a Company is Legitimate
Before you hit “apply,” you need to make sure the company you’re interested in is the real deal. Fake companies and fake recruiters can create convincing job postings, so verification is key. Here’s how you can easily check if a company is legitimate.
Start With a Simple Google Search
Begin by typing the company name into Google. Look for their official website, business directories, and any news mentions. A real company should have a web presence beyond a sketchy job post.
Check their website. Look for a professional design, contact page, and company information. Many scam sites are poorly made, have no physical address, or feature generic stock photos. A lack of transparency is a major red flag.
Check Reviews and Ratings
Websites like Glassdoor, Indeed, and Trustpilot allow current and former employees to leave reviews. See what people say about the company’s work culture and hiring process. If reviews are overwhelmingly negative or completely nonexistent, proceed with caution.
Also, check for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating. While not every legit business is listed there, a company with a strong presence on the BBB adds credibility.
Verify Contact Information
Look up the company address on Google Maps. Is it a real location, or just a mailbox? Call or email using the contact info on their website. Legit businesses will respond professionally.
If someone reaches out with a job offer, always verify their email address. Real company emails don’t end in Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook unless it’s a very small business. Be cautious if you see misspellings in the domain name or vague job titles.
